Bikini
History of the Bikini
Bikini’s are traditionally made of two
sections, one covering the breasts and the other
covering the groin area. The first mainstream
bikinis started appearing in the 30’s in
Germany and then started to appear in the US during
the war after the government ordered a 10% decrease
in materials used for women's
swimwear due to rationing.
The Bikini is thought to have been named by French
designer Jacques Heim after the US nuclear test
site ‘Bikini Atoll’. Rumours are that
the reasoning behind this was the excitement a
bikini would produce would be atomic!!
For many years the bikini was banned in film and
many countries around the world due to it’s
risqué nature. A few iconic appearances
of the bikini, such as Ursula Andress in the Bond
film Dr. No cemented the bikini’s place
in fashion, where it has remained till today.
Many other variations on the bikini design have
developed over the years….
